In the process of re-establishing priorities and strategies in research policy and innovation, OGS must undertake specific actions aimed at facing the 3rd millennium societal challenges as for the European Community Documents Horizon 2020 and Europe 2020. In order to satisfy the expectations of the citizens-taxpayers, the research system must undertake innovative initiatives and actions able to:

  • Create new opportunities for qualified jobs to the new generations, accelerating the transition towards a knowledge-based economic system, which will ensure a sustainable, inclusive and, as a result, competitive occupation, and quality of life;
  • Make the country more attractive to talents and investments, so reinforcing the capability to produce excellent research in forefront infrastructures and recognizing the value of young talents and fostering the awareness of the social and economic value of research, science, and culture in the contemporary society;
  • Accelerate the transformation of research and knowledge products into industrial and commercial products as a service to society and to people (social economy), so removing the obstacles that cause delay to the access to results by the potential users.

These objectives can be met through the integration of players, strategies, actions, and tools, as well as focussing the attention on the stream end-user enterprise research. The presence of a chain that covers scientific evidence (research) to their industrialization (companies), their use (end-users), financially supported with a view to unique project, will ensure the products developed to enter the operational chains of end-users and then reach the market quickly. For his vocation and history, OGS is well integrated in this strategic vision as having strength in its operational capability and the uniqueness to provide responsible products multidisciplinary by nature.

In essence, the three points above are in fact the new paradigm of research planning in Europe that will be performed as part of Horizon 2020. To meet this challenge, OGS has in place to serve the country and its scientific excellence operating in strategic sectors in the field of oceanography, earth sciences and environment. The definition of the strategic objectives, while naturally following the fields where OGS has been for a long time a leading position both nationally and internationally, refers exactly to the priorities that emerged at the level of international and national bodies such as the National Research Program (PNR), EU Horizon 2020, the MDG (Millennium Development Goals) of the United Nations, the programs ICSU (International Council for Science) UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) and the JPI (Joint Programming Initiative).


Strategic themes

The activities of technical / scientific research on which OGS will focus in the near future are grouped into five major themes:

Folllowing the implementation of the Research Bodies reform according to Legislative Decree n. 213/2009 the new Scientific and Technological Sections have been constituted in order to improve coordination and collaboration among the OGS different scientific fields of excellence:

For each of the five scientific areas, the expected results in terms of social (sicence for society), economic (science for economy) and knowledge (science for knowledge) by focusing on key areas of the OGS intervention activities.

Technology transfer

The transfer of technologies and skills is an important tool to enhance and circulate the objectives and the results of the scientific research, and it is fundamental for the cultural and industrial development of our country.

OGS has consolidated and continuous relationships with the companies, aimed at spreading the program and research results, and to promote cooperation public/private.

Technology transfer towards enterprises, particularly in Italy, is a main target of some peculiar OGS activities, as the ones oriented towards the exploration geophysics, where the interaction with the industry has always been strong (we recall that until a few years ago a place in the management Board of OGS was designated to a representative of ENI).

The many service projects of OGS show the interest of the Institution to invest in innovation and to develop an approach open to the collaboration with the industrial compartment.

As regards as the High-tech sectors, technology transfer and public/private collaboration are implemented through four channels:

  • Research projects directly commissioned by industry;
  • Initiatives promoted by OGS to which companies are also invited to take part in(as in the European projects) to guarantee a greater possibility of success in terms of effective industrial application of the research results;
  • Creation of public/private laboratories, facilitate by the eventual geographical location, or requested by specific projects;
  • Placement on the market of knowledge, which third parties may use (software).

In OGS the technologic transfer is realized mainly through the action of the first point in the above list: i.e. the industry acquires, through research contracts specific competences of which generally keeps the results, determining a direct technological transfer of the know-how present in OGS.

Another way in which the technology transfer occurs in OGS is made possible through the software (fourth point of the list), based on algorithms developed through researches; the software products are fully or partially realized at OGS, as in the case of the software Cat3D, used in seismic tomography. The software Cat3D represents a real platform of technological transfer, where algorithms and procedures, developed by the research in OGS, are implemented and commercialized for the industry, whereas the scientific use is free. Cat3D is a real and durable example (the software was born in 1997) of opening and exploitation of the knowledge acquired within OGS towards the industrial world.

Moreover, OGS is present in various European projects where the industrial component is partner and benefits of the direct technology transfer (see the list of the industrial partners).

As regards as the implementation of laboratories public-private, the latter represented an important opportunity in the last years (Consorzio STEMMA, and Airborne Remote Sensing) but at the moment they are not operative as their objectives have already been reached. We also point out that in 2012 OGS entered as member in the technological naval and nautical- DITENAVE of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

In the forthcoming three years 2013-2015 we intend to continue with the actual strategy, i.e. to invest in a policy devoted to the technology transfer to reach and maintain a competitive position in the national and international market. Among the various on-going projects we would like to point out a recently approved initiative within the Program NSTIP (National Science Technology and Innovation Program) of Saudi Arabia government; OGS with King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia) and the Italian Entec will promote a two-year project of development of a prototype of a new kind of seismic interferometric sensor.

An additional important aspect that will be faced in 2013 relates to the transfer of a proprietary technology, covered by some OGS patents (seismic while drilling), in the field of geothermal research, i.e. toward industrial application related to renewable energy resources. Furthermore, OGS is willing to participate actively in various projects in the Smart cities sector, actually under submission, that allowed to start new and significant collaboration with the industry.



OGS owns 8 patents related to geophysical, remote sensing and application of marine biology themes.

During 2012 no patents have been submitted. As regards as the 2013-2015 it is difficult to forecast the possible proposals of patent coming from the research; some ideas are under evaluation. In particular, it is deemed interesting a proposal related to the development of a "differential data logger" with temperature sensors to measure the heat flow in non-consolidate sediments. The system passed the prototypal phase and has been produced by the electronic OGS laboratory in 5 functioning exemplars.
